What is facial psoriasis?

Progressive stage of psoriasis on the facial skin

An autoimmune disease of a non-infectious nature, manifested by severe redness of the skin with the appearance on its surface of small scales (papules), which gradually increase in size and merge with each other, is called psoriasis. In this case, the person feels itching and discomfort, coupled with the disgust of others who do not understand that this disease is not transmitted through everyday contact.

Even with the modern level of development of medicine, it is impossible to reliably identify the cause of this insidious disease. It is believed that the disease is caused by a hereditary factor, disorders of the immune or hormonal system, disorders of lipid metabolism, as well as constant stressful situations.

The most common location of psoriasis on the face is the area around the eyes and temples, the eyebrows, the nasolabial folds and the peripheral zones near the scalp.

There are two types of psoriasis – vulgar (most common) and seborrheic. Unlike vulgar seborrheic disease, it is a more complex form of the disease, as it is characterized by the appearance of particularly dense and large papules, as well as scales covered with a layer of sebum with a yellowish tint. The widespread belief that seborrhea (increased sebum production) is the cause of this form of psoriasis is incorrect.

The course of the disease is accompanied by phases of remission (disappearance of symptoms) and relapses (reappearance of symptoms after a certain period of time).

Characteristic signs of psoriasis

In order to correctly recognize and determine the presence of psoriasis, and not another dermatological problem, you need to know the following main symptoms of this disease.

  1. If you run the nail plate over the plaques with scales that appear on the surface of the skin, you will subsequently notice increased peeling in this area. This sign is called a stearin stain because it resembles a drop of frozen wax, which forms many flaking plates when touched by the finger.
  2. When the skin is thoroughly cleaned of the resulting scales, a thin, bright red-colored film becomes visible on the surface of the epidermis. This feature is called terminal film.
  3. After removing the final film from the skin surface by scraping, small, multiple, punctate hemorrhages in the form of small drops are observed. This bleeding is caused by the close location of the capillaries to the epidermis, which are easily damaged as the disease progresses. This phenomenon is called blood dew.

Plaques and papules grow in psoriasis and increase in size quickly. By merging, they form individual conglomerates that disfigure the affected facial area. To avoid the appearance of scars, do not comb the affected skin areas or remove crusts.

Stages of psoriasis

There are three main stages of clinical manifestation of psoriasis on the facial skin:

  1. Progressive. It is characterized by an increase in the size of existing plaques and their merger into a single spot with the active appearance of new papules, as well as a bright red rash with a scaly structure against the background of severe itching. New rashes appear when scratching.
  2. Stationary. Its peculiarity is the cessation of papule growth with a noticeable decrease in peeling. Existing plaques turn blue and the itching subsides.
  3. Regressive. This stage is associated with the masking of all symptoms of the disease. All manifestations of psoriasis become almost invisible. Peeling and itching completely disappear, papules and plaques begin to dissolve.

Skin care recommendations for psoriasis

In such a situation, it would be correct to immediately contact a specialist - a dermatologist who will conduct a comprehensive examination of the body, determine the extent of skin damage, prescribe professional treatment, and also tell you how to properly care for skin affected by psoriasis. If for some reason you cannot see a doctor now, then listen to the following tips and recommendations.

  • Use cosmetic cleansing and facial care products for sensitive skin to avoid injury and subsequent exacerbation of the disease.
  • Avoid vigorously rubbing the affected skin surface after washing. It is best to dry these areas with a paper napkin and carefully apply it to the problem areas.
  • It is worth temporarily (before visiting the doctor) to stop using any cosmetics, including decorative ones.
  • You should not use scrubs and exfoliating agents, as they can cause inflammatory reactions and aggravate the situation.
  • Men who use razors should replace them with an electric razor, which causes less damage to the surface of the epidermis.
